Nals and the surrounding area

Quiet, idyllic and set in the heart of the valley

The rural village of Nals, with its 2,000 inhabitants, is located at 321 meters above sea level on the western side of the Adige Valley between Meran and Bolzano.  Lovingly nicknamed “Rosendorf”, meaning the village of roses, a quick walk around the village gives you a stunning insight into why.

Orchards and vineyards extend over a wide area in and around the village. Witnesses from bygone eras such as castles, stately homes and imposing farms characterise the timeless landscape. Perched above Nals in Sirmian is Schloss Payersberg, and on the way up to Prissian stand the Pfeffersburg and the Wehrburg castles.  In the village of Nals itself there are the Stachelburg and Schwanburg castles to admire.

The village is 16 km south of the spa town of Merano and 14 km north of the provincial capital of Bolzano. Due to its central location, Nals is the ideal starting point for your holiday.

Activities in Nals

We are a 3-minute walk from the sports area of Nals with its tennis courts, mini golf, outdoor swimming pool, beach volleyball court and a spacious children’s playground.

Local shops

In Nals there are two grocery stores, a patisserie and bakery, a pharmacy, a winery offering wine tasting and a shop, a farm shop, a hairdressing salon and a beauty salon.  In addition, there is a bicycle shop (www.tobike-nals.it) where you can rent bicycles and e-bikes. Particularly popular is our small farmers market, which is held once a week from May to October. You can reach the centre of Nals on foot in just a few minutes.

Larger towns in the area are Lana (8 km) or Eppan (9 km) and of course the cities of Merano and Bolzano with their romantic shopping streets in the old towns.

Food and drink

In South Tyrol the refined combination of Alpine and Mediterranean cuisine makes dining an unforgettable experience.  Local specialities including “Kaiserschmarrn” (a fluffy sweet pancake) or “knödel” (dumplings in a variety of flavours) are on the menu beside Italian classics like antipasti and pasta dishes. The gastronomy in South Tyrol amazes with its quality and versatility.

In Nals you can walk to several restaurants, pizzerias, traditional “Törggele” places, bars and an ice cream parlour. In the hamlet of Sirmian a few kilometers away, there are also two restaurants (one with guesthouse), and a tavern. A large variety of eateries can be found in the surrounding villages, ranging from simple and rustic to sophisticated fine-dining.
